Removal of Mid-Year Examinations

[Mr Yu]

Back in 2022, Minster of Education Chan Chun Sing announced that all mid-year examinations for all primary and secondary school levels will be removed by 2023.

Schools will continue to conduct weighted assessments each term.

While some parents and students cheered as the removal of exams meant less stress, less emphasis on results, more time for CCA and other interest group like ballet, swimming. Some parents also felt that it could promote independence as students learn to be self motivated and do their self revision.

Advantages of this removal

While some parents and students cheered as the removal of exams meant less stress, less emphasis on results, more time for CCA and other interest group like ballet, swimming. Some parents also felt that it could promote independence as students learn to be self motivated and do their self revision.

Challenges observed

However, it is not a bed of roses. This move also brought about a new set of challenges based on our observation over the last couple of years.

  • Students do not have adequate practices under timed conditions. This cause them to be more nervous/mental block/make careless mistakes during the actual prelims or national exams as they do not have enough experience completing the questions under stress. Build stress resilience and ability to deal with exam mood.
  • It is difficult to gauge their academic progress and by the time they do proper revision for the year exam examinations, they realise they are lacking in knowledge for the topics covered in earlier part of the year. Most of the time, these earlier chapters are foundation topics. A clear understanding of them would help them grasps future topics better. By then, they would have a lot to catch up in a short amount of time. Lin Shi Bao Fo Jiao
  • Some students feel that they do not have to put in much effort since there is no examinations – this could lead to complacent attitudes.
